Streetwise, 2nd Edition

The purpose of risk management is to learn how to recognize and correct the professional lapses that commonly underlie avoidable malpractice suits.  An “avoidable” suit for our purposes is one in which the physician had the requisite knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate medical care.  Rather, the patient’s injuries ultimately arose out of errors in communication, documentation, record-keeping, and other steps in the care delivery process that should have led to an appropriate and timely diagnosis and treatment.
Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:
1. Recognize the key elements of a malpractice suit.
2. Explain your duty to the patient in a variety of non-traditional situations.
3. Build rapport with your patients and repair problematic relationships.
4. Control risks in traditional medical settings as well as in many non-traditional settings.
5. Document patient care in the manner most likely to prevent errors and reduce liability.
6. Avoid common missed diagnoses.
7. Use root cause analysis to help you prevent future errors
