Communication Among Colleagues, 3rd Edition
Overview
There are three situations in which it is particularly important that physicians clearly exchange all relevant patient information: during handoffs to or between hospital-based practitioners; when making specialty referrals; and when providing call coverage for another doctor who is treating patients who have recently been advised to call in if their symptoms worsen or fail to resolve. This course will focus on the inherent dangers of ineffective communication between doctors in those three situations.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course,you should be able to:
1. Discuss the importance of standardized patient handoff protocols.
2. Explain the difference between an “effective” and an “ineffective” referral.
3. Describe the types of information you should provide to physicians who are covering call for you.

Methodology
This is a self-study course consisting of text and CME test. Users should read the course content, answer the test questions and submit the answers for scoring. Those who complete the course with a score of 80 percent or higher will earn a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 creditTM.
