Risk Management Rounds
Orthopaedics Plus, Vol. IV

These are seemingly thousands of laws, rules, and regulations that affect the way you practice medicine. Fortunately, while the legal wording of various regulations may be virtually incomprehensible, the intent of the statutes is relatively straightforward. Therefore, the purpose of this course is to explain the reasoning behind the guidelines and what they are intended to accomplish.

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:

1.  Understand your duties and obligations under the HIPAA Omnibus Rule.
2.  Outline the steps necessary to develop a Medicare compliance program, and the importance of doing so.
3.  Explain the major issues to be considered in prescribing opioids, antibiotics, and bisphosphonates.
4.  Discuss the Joint Commission’s policy on disruptive behavior, and why it is important to conform to it.
